Solar PV Lighting System
In Nepal, many households are to this day compelled to use kerosene based Tuki lamp for household lighting, as they do not have access to electricity (either because of the geographical remoteness from the national grid or because of not having the capacity to pay for the electricity connection even in the place where national electricity grid is available). This form of lighting is neither cost effective nor is it environment friendly. Fumes from the kerosene lamps affect the eyes and lungs (especially of children and women who sit close to kerosene lamp in the evenings while studying and preparing food) and contribute to global warming due to release of greenhouse gas (each kerosene lamp is estimated to give off approximately 250 kg of greenhouse gas CO2 every year). The quality of light is inferior and there is a high risk of accidental fire. Additionally since kerosene has to be imported, government has to spend its limited foreign currency.
The kerosene lamps shall be displaced by solar photovoltaic based household lighting system through the integrated approach of community mobilization and technological intervention.
